Orvis definitely needs to redesign the look of their Helios for me to get excited about it. Purchase an Orvis Helios 3, Recon, Superfine, Clearwater, or Mission rod from Orvis or an authorized Orvis dealer and we will repair or replace it for a quarter of a century. I tried to upload photos but was unsuccessful. The Orvis 25-Year Guarantee means we’ll fix your broken fly rod, and if we can’t fix it, we’ll replace it, no questions asked. it does cast well, but I am not sure it's worth the price because of the looks. I have a Orvis Helios 2, unused with a blank warranty card for sale. I don't understand what Orvis was thinking in their Helios 3 design. I have to say, I think the Recon is a great rod for the price. I did get the Helios on a 25% sale at an Orvis in Atlanta. having said this, I do own both a Recon (8'6" - 5wt ) and a Helios 3F. I tend to gravitate towards expensive rods, with Burkheimer, Thomas and Thomas, Hardy and Winston being my favorites. The more developed your casting technique, the more critical you will be on rod functional attributes. If you are a good.no, let's say very good caster.if you have very good technique (better, if you have excellent technique), you can and will adopt well to (and enjoy) most higher end rods (you will probably not find much joy in casting low-end inexpensive rods). Just as "rod reviews" can give you some incite into a rod's nature.at least as far as the tester is may not provide you with the info on a rod for your unique casting ability. It can be a starting point, but may no give you the true feel of the rod. A few casts at a dealer's shop will not do rods justice (living with a rod for awhile will allow you to really evaluate and like or dislike a rod). It's up to individuals to pick the rod they feel most comfortable with. But tough competition dictates these days.so, most all mfgs produce very good rods. Orvis has produced lemons (Trident) in the past as have all the mfgs. more powerful and 20 stronger- 100 in tip impact strength. I have rods from all mfgs - so, I am not necessarily favored towards one company. the orvis helios 2 flyrod from the award winning second generation helios 2 range with significant improvements on the original. I have found Orvis to be customer oriented and easy to deal with (MHO). If you have the bucks go for the Orvis Helios. If money is a concern.I would say invest in the Orvis Recon. Get the best deals for orvis helios 2 5wt at. ![]()
